FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Broward County School Board passed a resolution officially endorsing Florida Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Week (SCIAW)in a meeting held today, November 7. The proclamation declares that all Broward County Public Schools are encouraged to acknowledge SCIAW and join in the Darrell Gwynn Foundation’s mission to create awareness of spinal cord injuries and educate teenagers on ways to prevent them. The Darrell Gwynn Foundation successfully lobbied for and established Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Week in Florida with a resolution passed by the Florida Senate in 2006 and every year since. The Darrell Gwynn Foundation’s mission is to provide SUPPORT for people with paralysis and PREVENT spinal cord injuries.
This year, Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Week is supported by a substantial gift provided by the Toral Family Foundation & Toral, Garcia & Battista Attorney’s At Law.
During Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Week, the Darrell Gwynn Foundation, through its Education & Prevention Program, will send speakers in wheelchairs into dozen of Broward County High Schools including Western HS, South Plantation HS, Douglas HS, Cypress Bay HS, West Broward HS, Stranahan HS, Chaminade-Madonna HS, Taravella HS, Ely HS, Coral Springs HS, Plantation HS, Barbara Goleman HS and American Prep HS to tell their stories of how a poor decision changed their lives forever. The presentations also include the showing of a powerful video: “It Could Happen to You”
The Education & Prevention Program teaches teenagers, the most at risk youth, the dangers of:
- Texting & Driving
- Drinking & Driving
- Diving in Unknown Waters
- Playing with Guns
- Not Wearing Seatbelts
- Reckless Horseplay & Activities
