The Darrell Gwynn Foundation offered 12 designated rehabilitation hospitals in Florida a chance to submit a proposal and engage in SCIAW activities in an effort to develop more awareness of spinal cord injuries and ways to prevent them. This marks the second consecutive year that Brooks Rehabilitation Hospital has earned the grant with its contributions to Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Week. “Brooks Rehabilitation continues to demonstrate its dedication to our shared mission,” said Darrell Gwynn Foundation co-founder Dr. Lisa Gwynn. “Their participation in SCIAW really helps get our message of awareness and prevention communicated around the State of Florida. For the second year in a row, they showed great creativity and passion in their proposal, to engage in SCIAW. They have become a great partner for our SCIAW campaign.”

The Darrell Gwynn Foundation lobbied for and secured official adoption of SCIAW by the Florida State Legislature in 2006 and each year since. In an effort to expand the outreach during this week, the Darrell Gwynn Foundation annually sponsors  a contest amongst 12 of the inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation centers designated by the Florida Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Program. Each of the centers invited to participate were asked to produce a comprehensive written proposal describing a program that can be executed during future SCIAW’s to promote a partnership between the Darrell Gwynn Foundation and the rehab center and to encourage rehab center participation statewide.
