Darrell Gwynn Foundation holds “Track Walk for Those Who Can’t”
GAINESVILLE, Fla.- The Darrell Gwynn Foundation, on behalf of its donors and race fans, donated two custom wheelchairs collectively valued at $33,000 to individuals in need at the Amalie Oil Gatornationals in Gainesville, Fla. on March 17. The donations were made during the foundation’s annual “Track Walk for Those Who Can’t” at the Auto Plus Raceway. The Darrell Gwynn Foundation’s mission is to provide SUPPORT for people with paralysis and PREVENT spinal cord injuries.
The Darrell Gwynn Foundation also thanked its partner and supporter, the NHRA, for all its support during the Amalie Oil Gatornationals. “Race fans we really need to appreciate the NHRA for all they do. They give us the opportunity to come here and make an impact in Florida and they go above and beyond to help our foundation execute its mission. Thank you for being such a wonderful organization and supporter of our mission,” said Darrell Gwynn, president of the Darrell Gwynn Foundation.
The first donation was a $26,000 a custom power wheelchair to Wesley Johnson of Jacksonville, Fla. Wesley was injured in a car accident in 2009 and sustained a spinal cord injury. His old wheelchair is a manual wheelchair which he cannot use because of the partial loss of the use of his hands. Medicaid denied his claim for the power wheelchair he needs. His new wheelchair will give him the independence he needs.
The second wheelchair donation was a $7,000 custom manual wheelchair to Zynetta Johnson of Jacksonville, Fla. Zynetta was also injured in a car accident. Her current wheelchair is in disrepair and she needed a new wheelchair to go back to work at Bank of America as a freelance graphic designer and complete her bachelor’s degree in computer engineering. With the donation by DGF she will be able to go back to work and school.
Prior to the wheelchair donations, Darrell Gwynn, Wesley & Zynetta the star drivers of the NHRA Alexis Dejoria, Doug Kallita, Antron Brown, Jeg Coughlin, Jr., Shawn Langdon, Larry Dixon joined Darrell Gwyn and led a “Track Walk for Those Who Can’t” designed to build awareness of spinal cord injuries and raise funds to support the foundation’s national Wheelchair Donation Program, which donates custom power wheelchairs to individuals facing medical and financial hardships. Over 250 NHRA fans donated $20 to participate in the track walk raising approximately $5,000 for the foundation.
In addition, the Darrell Gwynn Foundation formally presented a check for $10,000 to Brooks Rehabilitation Hospital of Jacksonville, Fla. Last November, during Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Week, Brooks Rehabilitation was awarded a grant from DGF for its efforts to raise awareness for spinal cord injury awareness week. The donation was made through the Darrell Gwynn Foundation’s Patient Assistance Fund.
