Former Gatornationals Champ Kalitta Taking Something Extra to Gainesville

March 12th, 2010

GAINESVILLE, Fla., (March 9, 2010) – This weekend at the Gatornationals will be extra special for veteran NHRA Top Fuel dragster driver Doug Kalitta and his team as they fly the colors of the Coors Extra Gold Special to honor former Top Fuel driver Darrell Gwynn.

As a tribute to Gwynn’s second consecutive Gainesville victory at the 1990 Gatornationals, Kalitta Motorsports donated a dragster to bear Gwynn’s marquee paint scheme during this year’s event. The special dragster not only will honor Gwynn’s on-track achievements, it also will recognize the Darrell Gwynn Foundation’s ongoing work to provide education about spinal cord injury prevention, offer support to those afflicted by spinal cord injuries and debilitating disease, and raise funds to help find a cure.

Gwynn was paralyzed from the chest down in an on-track accident just one month after his 1990 Gatornationals victory.

Kalitta Motorsports and the Darrell Gwynn Foundation have produced a unique video preview for the event this weekend in Gainesville as well. The video features comments by Connie Kalitta and Darrell Gwynn about this weekend’s event and it also offers an exclusive first look at the “new “ Coors Extra Gold Special Top Fueler at the Kalitta Motorsports race shop in Ypsilanti, Mich.
