SUNRISE, Fla. – The Darrell Gwynn Foundation, on behalf of Sawgrass Ford, donated a custom wheelchair to 16 year-old Alex Lowe of Plantation, Fla. at Sawgrass Ford on Monday, January 28. The funds for the wheelchair were donated by Sawgrass Ford whom held a December holiday promotion, “You Buy A Ride, They Get A Ride”, in which the Sunrise, Fla. dealership donated $100 to the Darrell Gwynn Foundation for every vehicle it sold or leased in December. Sawgrass Ford raised $25,000 for the Darrell Gwynn Foundation’s Wheelchair Donation Program. The Darrell Gwynn Foundation’s mission is to provide SUPPORT for people with paralysis and PREVENT spinal cord injuries.
“This is really great to get this wheelchair,” said wheelchair recipient Alex Lowe. “It’s really going to help me get around at school and help me do the things I want to do with my life.”
“We are very proud to make this $25,000 donation to the Darrell Gwynn Foundation so they can help people just like Alex,” said David Menten, president of Sawgrass Ford. “The average cost of a custom wheelchair is $25,000 and we set a goal to raise that much money with the promotion. We hit that mark and are proud to have made a difference in our community.”
Alex, a sophomore at Western High School, is diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and recently lost his ability to walk. He is unable to propel himself in his current manual wheelchair. His health insurance denied his claim to cover the full expense of the proper wheelchair he needs. Thanks to Sawgrass Ford, the Darrell Gwynn Foundation donated a custom manual wheelchair with power assist wheels to assist him in all activities in his daily life and ultimately give him the gift of mobility, freedom and independence.
Alex is a huge sports fan and his goal is to attend college after high school and pursue a career in sports. The wheelchair donation was made through the Darrell Gwynn Foundation’s national Wheelchair Donation Program.
