SUNRISE, Fla. – Sawgrass Ford donated $28,500 to the Darrell Gwynn Foundation in a special check presentation at the dealership on Tuesday, January 7. The donation by Sawgrass Ford represents proceeds from its “You Buy a Ride, They Get a Ride” promotion in December dedicated to raise funds for 2 year-old Lisa Marie Fernandez Garcia who desperately needed a new power wheelchair. With the funds raised, the Darrell Gwynn Foundation, on behalf of Sawgrass Ford, donated a custom power wheelchair to Lisa at the dealership. The Darrell Gwynn Foundation’s mission is to provide SUPPORT for people with paralysis and PREVENT spinal cord injuries.
“I’m very proud that we got to serve the people of South Florida by raising funds for this wheelchair,” said David Menten, president of Sawgrass Ford. “A lot of people who are driving a beautiful new Ford vehicle right now from Sawgrass Ford also know they were a part of this gift and I know its special to all of them.”
During the month of December, Sawgrass Ford donated $100 for every vehicle sold or leased to the Darrell Gwynn Foundation. the foundation identified Lisa as a candidate for a new wheelchair and the campaign driven by Sawgrass Ford and its customers began in December with the goal of raising the funds necessary to purchase her wheelchair which cost over $25,000.
“Sawgrass Ford is one of the true great community partners in South Florida,” said Darrell Gwynn, president of the Darrell Gwynn Foundation. “This promotion is one of the most unique and beneficial for everyone involved and I’m so appreciative of the support we receive from Sawgrass Ford.”
Lisa Marie was born with arthogryposis, which has led to a contracture of all 4 limbs leaving Lisa unable to walk or propel a manual wheelchair. Before this gift, Lisa would either lie on the floor or sit in a stroller which does not provide adequate support. This custom power wheelchair will allow Lisa the freedom and mobility to interact with others and begin to develop as a typical 2-year old. The donation by Sawgrass Ford gave Lisa the gift of mobility she deserves.
