DELRAY BEACH, Fla. — It’s another trip back down south this week for the Kalitta Motorsports Tequila Patrón Toyota Camry Funny Car team- this time to Charlotte N.C., for the infamous Four-Wide race, one of the most anticipated events on the 24-race NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing series circuit.
The feel of 40,000-horsepower and stunning visual display of four nitro-burning cars zipping down the 1,000-foot stretch at the same time has made the 4th annual Dollar General NHRA Four-Wide Nationals at zMAX Dragway a fan favorite.
In what will be her second appearance at the unique four-lane race, Patrón Funny Car driver Alexis DeJoria, looks to this weekend to keep her team’s positive momentum going. The black-and-green team, which has been steadily improving over the first four races, feels confident going into the race after coming off of their best race weekend to date.
“After Vegas, I feel like we’re really starting to get in to our groove. I’m looking forward to seeing what we can do this weekend at Four-Wide,” said the Toyota driver, speaking of her impressive semi-final appearance at the team’s last event in Las Vegas, which allowed her to break into the ‘Top Ten’ in the Countdown to the Championship points standing for the first time in her professional career.
“I know that in the past, Tommy [DeLago, crew chief] has had some great runs out in Charlotte. Hopefully we can all come together, qualify well and go some rounds again on Sunday.”
According to veteran tuner DeLago, “Based on our Vegas performance, it’s clear that we’re a little further ahead with our warmer weather setup than our other tune-ups, which is good for the string of summer races that are right around the corner. It looks like it might be a little cooler in Charlotte this weekend, and when you have those types of conditions, horsepower is king. We’re still figuring out the proper setup to get those crazy fast E.T.s that are possible in cooler, damper weather, but obviously the more we get to run the car in those conditions, the more opportunity we’ll have to improve in those types of conditions.”
“Like every week, we expect to use this weekend to move forward, make headway, and tackle and adapt to any situation put in front of us. Our team is solid and working well together, and we’ll see what this weekend holds.”
Alexis DeJoria and the Kalitta Motorsports Tequila Patrón Toyota Camry Funny Car team competes this weekend, April 19-21, at the 4th annual Dollar General NHRA Four-Wide Nationals fueled by Full Throttle at the zMAX Dragway in Charlotte, N.C.
